2011 Men's Pro League Recap - Week 4
This week’s games started with a bang as Da Squad handled Dem Boyz 95 – 82. A steady dose of Stephen Green in the post and Monty Taylor on the wing proved to be too much for Dem Boyz to handle. With Mike Hutch out of the lineup and Bobby Allbritton struggling for most of the game, Bryant Hunt tried to pick up the slack with 29 points. Pooh Oliver had his best offensive performance this season with 19 including 5 threes. For Da Squad, Green finished with 17 and Taylor dropped 26 including 6 threes. Newcomer Jonathan Bruce proved to be a great addition for Da Squad as he added 20 points. He garnered a comparison to Paul Pierce from my right hand man Ced Norton. Dem Boyz came out pretty flat with low energy. Stu Wright upped it coming in late in the 1st half, but it was obvious that they needed Hutch’s size and scoring ability. This team has the tools to make a run, but they have to be going on all cylinders to make it happen. Da Squad brought their A game as all 6 of their players finished in double figures. If they can secure a 2nd big man, they will have a chance to reclaim the title they earned just a few seasons ago.
The middle matchup of the night was the battle of winless teams as the Gym Rats prevailed over Enterprise 87 – 53. This game was not the exciting up-tempo game fans love, but it was a confidence booster for the Rats. Aaron Bond and Ben Stutler got their chemistry back on track with great passing to each other for easy buckets. Chad Fleming came back after twisting his ankle a few weeks ago to lead the team in scoring with 28. It was a rough go for Enterprise especially in the first half as they scored only 18 points. Zack Snyder had 12 of those 18 in the first half and finished with 20. Laron Dawn made a fashionably late appearance to score 18 in the second half himself, but it was too little too late. Stutler finished with 21 and Bond had 25 controlling the paint on both ends. The situation is looking bleak for Enterprise. Their leading scorer Brandon Sims was nowhere to be found and their leader Russell Adell went scoreless for the first time in a really long time. They will need to pull something off to become playoff eligible. The Gym Rats got the win they needed and gained some valuable confidence. They have a big game with Da Squad Wednesday. If Hunter Henry returns for them, they will have a great shot. Don’t sleep on the 1-3 Gym Rats.
Our last game of the night was our featured matchup as the Bro Kings continued their undefeated journey beating Team Elite 82-74. With Steven Vinson out with an injury captain Corey Schulte added Alden Smith to his squad. Now for a second there I was wondering why he wasn’t in training camp with the 49ers, but I was assured this was a different Alden Smith. Anyway he was a huge contributor adding even more size and strength at the forward position. He finished with 17, but it was Ronnie Tyson’s night to shine for the Bro Kings. He led the way with 19 points including 3 threes. Defensively, he hounded TJ Wesley who was held to just 5 points all night. Team Elite was down by 20 at one point in the 2nd half but they fought back behind the broad shoulders of Nick Burton. He had a tremendous 2nd half scoring 17 points and bringing his team back within 3 points. The Bro Kings would not be denied at they stepped up their defense. Jamar Howard and Christian Moody shut all routes to the hoop and Tyson came up with some big steals to give the Bro Kings a commanding lead in the standings. After the game Joe Simone discussed the need for reigning MVP Walter Bethea to return to the team. In my mind Team Elite must have Bethea to get back to the promised land. Right now, no one, not even the defending champions, have an answer for the Bro Kings.
Guys, remember that the regular season is almost over. All players must have at least 2 games under their belt this season to be eligible to play in the playoffs. The Trading deadline (players can shift to a different team) will be Friday August 19th. Those requests must be submitted to commissioner Reggie Hines on or before the 19th.
