The gracious personality of Amory "Slats" Gill made him one of the most popular coaches in America. His Oregon State teams captured five Pacific Coast Conference titles (1933, 1947, 1949, 1955, 1958) and eight Far West Conference championships. His 1949 and 1963 teams advanced to the NCAA Final Four. He was president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 1957-58. Gill served as OSU's athletic director from 1964 to 1966. Gill Coliseum, on Oregon State's campus, is named in his honor.
