Chuck Daly was awarded a scholarship to St. Bonaventure University in New York State, but after realizing his role would be minimal, transferred to Bloomsburg State College in Pennsylvania. After coaching high school ball for eight years in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Daly wrote to Vic Bubas at Duke University and was subsequently offered a job as assistant coach. He coached the freshman squad for the 1963-64 season, was assistant coach through the end of the 1968-69 season. Daly then accepted the head coach position at Boston College. In his two seasons there, he compiled a record of 26-24 before moving on to head coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Daly led the Pennsylvania Quakers to four straight Ivy League titles from 1972 to 1975, as well as consecutive NCAA East Regional finals in 1971 and 1972. Daly moved on to coach in the NBA in 1978. He led the Detroit Pistons to nine straight playoff appearances, winning back-to-back championships in 1988 and 1989. He is the first Hall of Fame Coach to lead a team to both an Olympic Gold Medal and an NBA Title.
