Known as "The Father of Wisconsin Basketball", Steinmetz was a scoring machine, despite standing only 5-foot-9 and weighing 137 pounds. Playing in only 49 games in his three seasons at the University of Wisconsin, Steinmetz poured in 950 points. In the 1904-05 season, he scored 462 of Wisconsin's total 681 points, including a 50 point game against Sparta College. In 1905 he led the Badgers to the Western Championship. He is a charter member of the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame.
