Robbins handled immediate criticism as the first white head coach in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) by doing what he did best, winning. Just two years into his tenure, Robbins led Virginia Union to the 1980 NCAA Division II National Championship. Two more Division II titles would follow in 1992 and 2005. Robbins finished his career with 14 CIAA Championships and an overall winning percentage of .786.
