Cowens was known as dedicated, unselfish and one of the hardest-working centers in recent basketball history. A tremendous rebounder as well as scorer, Cowens led the Florida State Seminoles to a 23-3 season his senior year, when he was named All-American. Cowens finished his college career with 1,479 points and 1,340 rebounds. He went on to star for the Boston Celtics, helping them to win NBA titles in 1974 and 1976. He was named NBA MVP in 1973.
