Nicknamed "One Grand" for scoring exactly 1,000 points in his college career. Schmidt was a power center who would explode for baskets from all angles. Recognized as one of the nations's greatest college basketball players of his era. A four-time All Conference selection, he led Kansas State to four straight conference titles. With Schmidt as the Central conference's leading scorer, Kansas State rolled to 47 straight victories. All-American in 1932. After college, he became an AAU star with Reno Creameries and the Denver Piggly-Wiggly team. Second-Team AAU All America, 1932.
