Biography

In his 46-year coaching career (high school, college and AAU basketball), Shelton achieved over 800 wins. During the 1930s and 1940s, he helped to grow college basketball in the West. In 19 years at the helm of the University of Wyoming, Shelton's Cowboys won over 300 games, including eight Skyline Conference championships and the 1943 NCAA Championship, led by early jump shooter and Hall of Famer Kenny Sailors. An innovative coach, Shelton developed the "five-man weave" offense. He also coached the Denver Safeways, led by Hall of Famers Jack McCracken and Bob Gruenig, to the 1937 AAU National Championship.
