Frank "Menty" Keaney devoted three and a half decades to the University of Rhode Island as a basketball, football, and baseball coach. Known as one of the earliest architects of run-and-shoot basketball, Coach Keaney compiled a 401-124 record in 28 seasons. During that time, he led Rhode Island to four NIT appearances. His 1939 Rhode Islands Rams were the first college basketball team to average over 50 points per game. In 1943, URI averaged 80.7 points per game, earning them the nickname, "The Firehouse Game." A celebrated educator and administrator, Keaney finished his 36-year career (1920-56) at RISC as Director of Athletics. Keaney Gymnasium was dedicated in his honor in 1953, and the school color, "Keaney Blue," was his creation.
