Biography

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee 1959

Clifford "Doc" Carlson's athletic interests went beyond basketball as he was talented on the football and baseball fields. As a student he was an All-American Football player for legendary Pittsburgh Coach Pop Warner's 1917 team. After completing his medical degree, "Doc" played football with the Cleveland Indians for one season before beginning his basketball coaching career at the University of Pittsburgh in 1923. Known for his figure eight offense, his team won the national championship in 1928 with a 21-0 season. "Doc" was the first Eastern coach to bring his team west.
