Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee 2005
Arriving as a freshman "walk-on" in the fall of 1962, Jim Boeheim has been a fixture at Syracuse ever since. As the Orangemen's co-captain, Boeheim teamed with Hall of Fame guard Dave Bing to lead Syracuse into the 1966 NCAA Tournament. Boeheim became the assistant coach at Syracuse in 1972, then head coach in 1976. Over the next three-plus decades, Coach Boeheim guided the Orangemen to three NCAA Final Fours (1987, 1996 and 2003) and the 2003 National Championship. He is the winningest coach in Big East Conference history with a 750-254 record through the 2006-2007 season. In 31 seasons, he led Syracuse to 30 post season tournament appearances (25 NCAAs and 5 NITs). Boeheim was three times named Big East Coach of the Year (1984, 1991, 2000) and was named USA Basketball National Coach of the Year in 2001. He has been a vital contributor to coaching staffs that have won seven gold medals in world competition. Coach Boeheim has also been a major leader in "Coaches vs. Cancer" and many other charitable outreach programs.
