McHale was a powerful low-post player with a great array of moves. He is among the top players in the history of University of Minnesota basketball where in four seasons he scored 15.2 points per game and had 950 rebounds. McHale played six seasons with the NBA Boston Celtics and became the first player in NBA history to shoot 60 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line in the same season. He earned NBA All-Defensive First-Team honors three times. McHale teamed with Larry Bird and Robert Parrish to form Boston's "Big Three", winning NBA titles in 1981, 1984 and 1986. He is one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.
