Known for his tenacious defense, Carril is the winningest coach in the history of the Ivy League. Under his leadership the Princeton Tigers won 13 conference titles, made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and had only one losing season. At the time he retired, he was the only coach to win 500 games without an athletic scholarship athlete. His teams led the nation in scoring defense 14 of his final 21 seasons, including 8 in a row from 1988 to 1996.
