Biography

Phil "Socrates" Woolpert played for and later served as freshman coach at Loyola University in Los Angeles. In 1959 he began his NCAA tournament career at the University of San Francisco with 11 straight wins. He led USF, with Hall of Famers Bill Russell and K.C. Jones, to the 1955 and 1956 NCAA titles. Woolpert was named both the Pacific Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year in 1955 and 1956. Under Woolpert, USF won 60 straight games. He also coached the San Francisco Saints of the ABL, then returned to college coaching at San Diego State University in 1962.
