Ralph Miller played for Hall of Fame coach Phog Allen at Kansas. In his 38-year collegiate coaching career at Wichita State University, University of Iowa, and Oregon State University, Miller's teams implemented a full-court press defense and a fast-break offensive attack that emphasized crisp passing. From 1980 to 1982, Miller's Oregon State Beavers won 77 of 88 games and compiled a 49-5 conference record. Miller was honored twice as Coach of the Year in three major conferences and named Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1982. Miller achieved conference championships in 1964, 1968, 1970, 1980, 1981, 1982 and won NCAA tournaments in 1964 and 1970.
